Application fee
- $75.00 (U.S.)
- Fee waivers can be granted for CMU students and alumni, GEM applicants, McNair Scholars, and those with financial hardship. Contact us if you believe you qualify for a fee waiver.
Unofficial transcript
- Upload the unofficial transcript into the application system before submitting your application.
- Official copies of final transcripts will be requested upon enrollment.
Essay responses
- Questions accessible within the application system and vary by program.
Copy of CV/Resume
- Upload your CV/resume into the application system before submitting your application.
- If you have publications that you would like the admissions committee to review, please link to them in your online resume.
Three letters of recommendation
- Upload all letters of recommendation into the application system before submitting your application.
Non-native English speakers: Official Duolingo English Test, TOEFL, or IELTS scores
- All international and United States permanent resident applicants must take an English language proficiency exam. This is required as a component in determining academic success in the program and to support visa applications for admitted students studying on an F-1 visa.
- Scores must be received by the application deadline for the semester in which students are applying.
- An English language proficiency test is not required if the applicant holds a previous degree from an institution in the United States or if the applicant is a CMU student or alum. It is also not required for applicants with United Kingdom or Canadian citizenship.

- You do not need to have or make contact with a faculty advisor before applying. Please continue directly to the application and students will be matched with faculty advisors during the application review process.
- Official GRE scores are not accepted for review.
- All fees charged are non-refundable.
- Do not mail any paper documents to the CEE Graduate Admissions Office as they will not be included in your file for review by the admissions committee.
Application review process
The CEE Graduate Admissions Committee will begin reviewing applications shortly after the published deadline. CEE will continue to accept supporting documents like test score reports and letters of recommendation for two additional weeks beyond the deadline. These items will be added to your application review as they are received.
